On the Road Again

by amy

I’m blogging from my dad’s den in Cottage Grove. We’re spending tonight here and heading back to Winsted sometime tomorrow afternoon.

I started out the day with an early morning run with my friend, Marie. We started later than I usually do– it was 6:00am and not 5:30- Ha! Sleeping in, I tell you! We did 7 miles. Being with her made me run faster than I would have on my own. If it had just been me, it would have taken another couple of minutes. We were talking and enjoying ourselves and the time went by very quickly.

This afternoon, Ethan, Audrey and my dad played in the little kiddie pool that Grandpa had set up. They also used water guns and the garden hoses to spray each other.

My brother is here (with his bride). He wants me to say that he is awesome. He’s the best one I ever had. That’s the truth.

Anway, not much else to report. Audrey is snuggled up to Missy and will be asleep before 6:30 because of all the excitement of the day. Isaac is already in bed. Ethan is enjoying Sumo of the Opera Veggie Tales.

Oh, I almost forgot. My dad is out with Joyce tonight at Lumberjack Days in Stillwater. They are there for the Chicago concert. I think it’s awesome that my dad is at a concert for a band that was popular in the 80′s. It must be true love :-) I would also like to take the opportunity to brag on my dad. Last week, he had a little celebration with some of his co-workers. He recently hit a major milestone for work. I wont tell you how much money the policy’s that he has sold bring in for Genworth, but it’s a lot. Way to go, Dad! He never toots his own horn. I thought I would do it for him.

Have a lovely evening or day or whatever it is when you read this. Pictures from our weekend will be posted tomorrow.

A little something about all of us

by amy

I laid Isaac down 4 times today. That’s how cranky and how unsuccessful some of our nap attempts were! We’re in this really rough stage where his sleep needs are changing and I haven’t found the “sweet spot” for when to lay him down. He’s also cranky from teething. I can feel a few areas where teeth are coming and he’s drooling so much that his shirts are soaked through.

Audrey has started doing this adorable thing. Every time we watch The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast or some princess show/movie, she goes and gets her dress up clothes and puts them on. It’s so cute and so girly. I love it!

Ethan keeps getting more and more sweet. Maybe it’s that he’s grown up now at 5 years old. I love hearing him sing when he’s sitting by us at church. And when it’s time to greet people, he tries to shake as many hands as he can in the short time he has. He prayed for our friends, Ray and Dawn, when they were getting ready to have Caden. I talked to Ethan about praying for them and he decided to go to his room and figure out exactly what to pray by himself. I could hear him praying the Dawn would be okay and that the baby would be healthy. I told him later that Caden lived for only a short time and Ethan took it all in stride. We talked about how Grandma Henning was probably seeing Caden. Ethan, Audrey and I also prayed for Grandpa Henning and for Nana and Grandpa Fritz today. They each chose some specific prayer requests and they did the praying themselves.

Nathan just got back from running 5 miles. He had a time goal and he met and exceeded it(ran faster than his goal)– by quite a bit. We cheered him on as he finished the last block. We had gone outside at about the time I thought he would be returning. There was lots of yelling and clapping. :-) Nathan is finishing his paperwork for applying for grad school. It’s really going to happen. It will change our schedule a little, but it will be worth it.

As for me, I don’t remember what I accomplished  today. I know I did some laundry and dishes. I also made 3 trips to the local grocery store. It’s nice to have one 2 blocks away when you realize you don’t have something you need. Oh yes, I also had Parent/Child swim lessons with Audrey and did some baking and cooking for some friends. Life is good. We’re enjoying our summer.

New (to us) van and other random things

by amy

We have possession of a new (to us) van. The old one wasn’t doing the job anymore and we will be getting rid of it. Goodbye, old Windstar. We made some happy memories together.

The newest vehicle-addition to our family is a Freestar. We hope to have my happy trips through the next years. I don’t have a photo yet, but I’ll be sure to take one. I’m sure everyone is dying to see it.

In other news, we had fun playing with the Henely’s dog yesterday. We scheduled a play date so that kids could spend some time with Sam. They all had a great time. Sam was very good with the kids and the kids were good to Sam. Except for Isaac. Isaac pulled on his ears and whatever else he could grasp. He loved Sam too, but he needs to learn how to be gentle. Sam was completely well-behaved even Isaac wasn’t.

I ran yesterday morning. I went 2.5 miles. The temperature was a pleasant 65, but the humidity was at 95%. Interesting running weather. It’s been surprising to me how much easier it was to get comfortable to run in the cold weather than it has been in hot, muggy weather. Nathan also got some running in yesterday too. He did it in the 90 degree heat in the evening. That’s real dedication. He has a goal to get in a certain number of miles this summer. He made a chart to track his progress and he wanted to have some of the chart colored in so that when Ethan got up this morning Ethan could see his progress! The chart is another thing I should take a picture of for you. I’ve been horrible at taking pictures lately.

Ethan had swimming lessons again last night. He jumped in the deep end to his instructor. He was afraid, but, again, he did it. I just keep telling him how awesome he is and I smile really big when he looks at me with a tentative expression.  I’ve said it before, but I have to say it again- I am so proud of him! There is something about watching your child face their fear and move ahead anyway that is awesome.

Audrey was feeling a little under the weather this evening. She ate a little too much junk food today. She was very cute as I tucked her in. I believe she told me that she wasn’t going to come in my room because she didn’t want to get me sick. She also said that she wasn’t going to eat again! I hope she changes her mind by tomorrow.

I’m pretty sure that Isaac has been saying “Hi”. It’s probably one of those things that only a parent would consider a word though. Time will tell. He’s still crawling. He pulls up on things all the time and he can stand up in the middle of the room without pulling himself up. One of these days he’ll take off walking, but he’s pretty happy with his current method of transportation.

That’s all the news here. Hope you all are having a fabulous week.

Swimming, Storms and Sillyness

by amy

I have not been blogging as much lately. I have been doing some old-fashioned pen and paper journaling. I just haven’t been doing as much online. I’ve been trying to focus more on living our lives here and less on writing and reading.

So, what have we been doing?

1. Isaac walked 5 steps in a row! He’s getting closer to being a walker. This is very exciting and it’s almost official that we’re saying “goodbye” to babyhood.

2. We had lunch with Nathan at Crown on Tuesday.

3. I had a dentist appointment to have two cavities filled.  It was quick and easy. When I got back, I started thinking about what we should do for fun and I decided we should go to the beach. I wondered if it might be a crazy idea, but I decided to go for it. I packed up the three kids, water, sunblock, towels, diaper bag, and sand toys. We picked up lunch on the way and had it on the beach. We had a blast! We ate lunch and then E&A played in the sand and splashed in the water. Isaac crawled around a little and I held his hands as he walked in the water. It went smoothly enough that I’m going to do it again.

4. I saw a funnel cloud just west of our home tonight. Sirens went off, kids were in the basement and Nathan was driving home. The storm went north and east of us.

5. Ethan started swimming lessons tonight. He was scared, but he did everything asked of him and I couldn’t be more proud of him! I love that boy!

6. Nathan and I will be doing another 5k race in our town in August. We have 7 weeks to get ready! Woohoo!

7. I did well with my eating and exercise this week and am hoping to see a weight loss tomorrow.

I think that covers our excitement. We have been enjoying our summer so far.

Beginning of Summer

by amy

Summer doesn’t officially start yet, but school is out here. So, it’s summer.

So far we have not played a lot outside in our yard. The mosquitoes are really bad. Ethan and Audrey are freaked out by them. I would be frustrated with their response if there were just a few mosquitoes. There are tons of them. We’re keeping the yard mowed, trying to make sure we don’t have water collecting anywhere and still our back yard is like a jungle when it comes to those critters. It’s no fun! They aren’t as bad in the front of the house or even when we go to the park by the lake. Sort of strange.

We’ve been making lots of treks to the park. I’m thinking of making a goal to visit all the parks in town this summer. There are 6 of them. Ethan and Audrey love going. This stage for Isaac makes it really hard for me though. Isaac isn’t big enough to play on the equipment. He will tolerate being pushed in the swing for a little while, but not long. Then he starts to whine. For the remainder of our time at the park, I have to either hold him or let him crawl around in the wood chips/sand. He doesn’t really want to be held and he’s heavy and he likes to put everything in his mouth (sand and wood chips included). We don’t stay very long. I’m trying to figure out a good solution to this.

Last week we had two birthdays. Mine was the 2nd and Isaac’s was the 3rd. Nathan brought us a cake.

I’m finally having a good week for my diet. I had been really bad for a couple of weeks (see previous picture!) and put on about 5 pounds. I just made poor decisions. The gain wasn’t surprising. This week I decided that I was going to plan ahead what I was going to eat the next day. It’s worked really well.  It has taken my focus off of food. I don’t have to always be thinking about what I want to eat next or eating too much. Tomorrow’s weigh-in should bring good news!

Ethan, Audrey and I had dental appointments on Wednesday. The kids LOVE going to the dentist. This was their second visit. They do such a great job with kids and they schedule us all at once. The kid’s teeth were good. Audrey has a cross bite on one site that they will watch when she gets her permanent teeth. Hopefully it will resolve itself. I had 2 cavities. I suspected it because they had been watching these areas for a while now and they just now are bad enough to “restore”. They have this cool wand they run over your teeth and it beeps if it detects decay and reads out a number saying how bad it is. Nathan calls it the “guilt-o-meter”.  Next week I get to have fillings. Not my favorite thing. but better than losing all my teeth, I guess!

Isaac isn’t walking on his own yet. He will push the little pooh-bear walker across the room. He even turns it a little when he gets stuck. Soon he’ll be independently walking. He says, “”dada”, “mama”, and “did it”(or something that sounds a lot like it–he says it a lot) and he makes lots random happy sound effect noises while he’s playing.

Our van is still in Lake City. I think this may be the end of the line for it. The electrical issues have gotten to be too many or just enough that I can’t count on it working right. Not a single mechanic has been able to fix it. This will be the 3rd place that has attempted it. If he can’t assure us that this most recent issue is resolved, I don’t think Nathan or I will want to be driving it. So, anyone want a Ford Windstar whose battery randomly stays running even with the keys out of the ignition, speedometer and other dashboard indicators sometimes stop working while you’re driving (do you really need to know how much gas you have or how fast you are driving?), and now, sometimes thinks it’s being stolen when you try to start the car and locks down and wont ignite the ignition?

We’re excited to see everyone at the birthday celebration on Sunday in Cottage Grove! I’m especially excited that I don’t have any cleaning to do so I can focus on the fun stuff- like food :-) !
