Isaac is home!

by amy

Isaac was able to keep his breakfast and lunch down yesterday so he was discharged at about 1:00. This was taken as we were waiting for lunch. I was happy. Isaac was not as thrilled. He’s still tired and weak.

Before going to get him at the hospital I had cleaned his room, changed his sheets, and disinfected the crib and changing table to banish the germs. They better be gone. Isaac still doesn’t have very much energy. He gets tired very easily. He is still on a restricted diet and we’re on a very tedious schedule of giving him an ounce of fluid every hour. I gave him some watered-down formula yesterday and he seemed to do fine with it for while. Until I discovered this:

Ethan or Audrey had left out a bowl of goldfish crackers. Isaac found them, partook and then puked it all out a few minutes later. We have not had any puking incidences since. And now there are no bowls of goldfish in his reach! Thanks for the prayers. We are very grateful and giving glory to God for his healing. Please keep praying that he’ll get the sleep he needs and that his strength will return along with his ability to return to a normal diet.

Isaac is doing better

He gets to come home if he keeps breakfast and lunch down! Thank you, Jesus for healing our baby.

Poor baby is having a rough time

by amy

I spent from 6:45am until after noon in the ER this morning. We thought that after getting a good amount of IV fluids in him he would perk up like a “flower”. Unfortunately he didn’t perk up and when he was offered some pedialite he promptly puked it back up. Then he was so wore out that he fell asleep. Unfortunately, about the time he settled into a deep sleep, some nurses came to do some blood work. It wasn’t pretty. Babies have tricky veins. Dehydrated babies? Well, you might was well be flying blind. The first two nurses put the tuniquet on looked for veins, didn’t find anything and didn’t even attempt to poke him. The third nurse felt more confident and stuck him good and tortured him a while looking for a vein and never found one. They ended up doing a finger prick for blood work.

At this point they told me that he was getting admitted for the day. Finally, we were transported upstairs, I settled Isaac in his crib and he went to sleep. I went to get lunch. This was the one and only good stretch of sleep the poor baby got.

I was very happy when our doctor stopped to see us. I had asked earlier if we would see a doctor today (other than the ER doctor I already talked with) after we got admitted and the nurse said that I would have to wait until they rounded in the morning tomorrow. It was so nice to see our doctor walk in unexpectedly. She didn’t have to come, but she did! Nathan took over at about 4:00. He’s taking the rough over night shift. By the time I left, Isaac still hadn’t taken any food or drink by mouth since the time in the ER. When I called and spoke with Nathan a little while ago he said that Isaac has taken about an ounce of water and had kept it down so far.

Please keep praying that Isaac would recover quickly. Pray that he would get some restorative sleep. He is really missing his sleep and this isn’t helping. I would love it if Isaac would be able to come home tomorrow, but I don’t think that’s very realistic. If the call is made by the doctor when they do rounds in the morning and Isaac has just started taking a tiny bit of fluid by mouth now, it doesn’t seem likely. I guess that’s alright though. We just want him to get better. If that means a couple of days in the hospital that’s alright.

Oh, and the nurse said it “smelled like Rotavirus” for whatever that’s worth. Is that an official diagnosis?

Isaac update

by nathan

Amy and Isaac are in Waconia at the Hospital today. Isaac woke up as floppy as he was yesterday and didn’t keep down even the first fluids we gave him. We decided it was time to get in ASAP. The ER staff checked him over and did put him on an IV drip by early morning. He took two bags of fluid, but still couldn’t keep down the oz of Pedalyte they tried to give him afterward.

They’re admitting him now, just to keep him on fluids while they wait for the bloodwork. I’m not there, but Amy says she really thinks it’s just the stomach bug hitting him particularly hard. There’s no fever, ear infection or anything else at this point. Probably just a matter of keeping him hydrated and letting him work past the virus, now.

She says he’s starting to get some color back, but he’s not been able to get much sleep yet — every time he starts into a nice block of sleep he gets poked or prodded…

The COOKAMUNGAPHOBIA has hit us hard

by amy

What? You’ve never heard of COOKAMUNGAPHOBIA? I use it to refer to being sick. It’s a general catch-all word that covers illness. After using it around Nathan for the first time I realized that perhaps my mom made it up.

So, I googled it. It seems it may have originated from Sesame Street. It’s the diagnosis that Cookie Monster gives to Ernie when Ernie turns down the offer of a cookie. At least that’s the first results I found that made sense when I googled it. Also, how does one actually spell that word? Maybe it would mean something different with a different spelling. So, Dad, where did that word come from?

Anyway. . . we got sick. Nathan, Isaac and I were down for the count. Ethan and Audrey were basically on their own and they did fabulously. Lots of tummy upset for Nathan and Isaac which also included puking. I just didn’t eat anything all day, my entire body hurt and I had a temp of 101.something (that’s really high for me because my normal is lower than normal for most folks). For Isaac, this has resulted in him getting sick almost every time we feed him. We’re on a schedule of waking up through the night to offer him an ounce at a time. So far, tonight, he’s been keeping all that down. Maybe it’s because we don’t actually get him up and move him. We just go in his room, turn the light on and stick a bottle in his mouth for about minute. If he’s jumping around giggling and chasing his siblings tomorrow morning, we wont go to see the doctor. If he’s not, we’ll make an appointment.

This is what COOKAMUNGAPHOBIA looks like:

More simple math

by nathan

2 parents – 2 sick parents = Ethan running things around here.

Isaac’s still not himself, but Amy and I have now picked up the same bug. Nasty little thing, too…

No pictures for this one — believe me, you do not want to see me today :-)

Simple Math

by amy

1 sick child + 1 more sick child + yet another sick child all within a week’s time

= 3 comforters washed, 3 crib sheets changed, 1 baby covered head to toe in puke and some other stuff not to be mentioned, and 2 parents experiencing several rounds of getting puked on.

Tired.

Thankful for the opportunity to be able to snuggle and comfort my kids when they are sick.
