Project Life- April 11-17

by amy

Nathan was offered tickets to the Casting Crowns concert! We lined up a babysitter and went on a date! The music was great and the view was good. The tickets were in one of the suites so we were nice and comfy.

Poor Audrey doesn’t feel well. She laid around and cried a lot on Monday. It was a bit of a challenge to take care of her and Isaac, but Ethan helped a lot.

Tuesday is story time at the library and this day’s theme was the color red. The kids put red paint on their hands to make hand-print flowers. They turned out looking kind of pink. Oh well. The kids loved it!

We had Sara and Baby Victoria over on Wednesday. Victoria is so cute and smilely. Audrey watched Sara feed the baby and later decided to try it with her dolly and shawl. She’s going to love this photo when she’s a mom!

On Thursday night Ethan became the next victim of the stomach bug. He slept on the floor in the living room that night.

On Friday I made these yummy bars!

On Saturday while I was working on my scrapbooking, Nathan took the kids to see the Big Wheels at the local highschool.

Highlights from this last week

by amy

We started out our week by celebrating Easter at Grandpa Henning’s house in Cottage Grove. I took a photo of all “my boys” all dressed up in their Sunday best. Aren’t they handsome? And why is Ethan doing some sort of gang symbol?

Every time I turn around, Isaac is pulling himself up on something. He loves to practice standing.

Nathan found a Snuggie on clearance at Target and he bought it for me! Ethan thought it was great so he tried it out. He laughed and laughed over how big it was on him.

Another picture of Isaac standing. Look at how close he is to standing without support? Ack!

Audrey loves to dance. Daddy loves to dance with Audrey. It’s a perfect combination. I love to see the strong bond they have. I pray that it will stay strong and healthy.

Our labor of love for little Gideon was a choo-choo cake. Gideon loves choo-choo’s and I had the time! So, I made a cake (with some help from Nathan) for his party.

Here’s the birthday boy and his cake. He loved it! Yeah!

Scrapbooking my Baby

by amy

I didn’t really do any scrapbooking before I became a mom. I put some basic albums together, but not many.

Then I had Ethan and I finally felt like I really wanted to dive in. Well, I didn’t exactly “dive”, but I dipped my little toe in and discovered that the water was “just fine” and soon found myself swimming in albums, idea books, tools, papers, stickers, . . . That was almost 5 years ago. My approach keeps changing, but my commitment to capturing these moments doesn’t.

For Ethan’s first year of life, I completed 20 front and back pages. That’s an entire album for one year. It was fun and I was never more than a few months “behind”. Then I had Audrey. My free time decreased a little and I now had 2 children to document. So, I started to think about my pace, what I could actually sustain, if I was going to keep these albums or give them to the kids when they got bigger and what my point was in doing this. Now, I have 3 children (and that’s all, thank you!) whose lives I want to record, but I want this to be fun and not a burden hanging over me.

This is how I decided to approach Isaac’s baby album-

  • I’m doing these scrapbooks with the idea that I’ll be giving them to each child when they graduate. With that in mind, I’m going to try to keep the number of albums down. Ethan is not going to want 18 photo albums. So….
  • I’m letting myself go a little crazy on the first year album. So many changes, growth and milestones happen that first year. It’s really fun to document all of that.
  • After the first year, I’m slowing the pace down a lot (more on that in a future post).
  • I’ve found that planning out what I want to include in the album ahead of time helps me select just the photos that I’ve already taken that serve that purpose and helps me to be more directed and mindful as I take photos in the future.
  • My page plan for Isaac’s baby album (which will include his first 2 years of life) looks like this (not necessarily in this order): collage of monthly photos, pregnancy photos, letter from me to Isaac, birth story and hospital  photos, early days at home, Christmas, Easter, Baby Dedication, first birthday, photos with siblings, photos with Daddy, photos with mommy, 2nd birthday, 2 page spreads for every 3 months that include favorite photos and journaling of milestones/routine/highlights.
  • I’m making a list of types of photos and moments that I want to capture and putting it somewhere as a visible reminder.
  • I’m making a renewed commitment to include lots of journaling- stories of what Isaac was like, what our life was like, how much we love him, what his siblings think of him and what they do with him. These are the things that Isaac is going to really appreciate as he gets older.

This is my progress so far. I’m about 9 months “behind”, but I’m happy with that!

I need to finish writing out Isaac’s birth story still.

In Progress

We’re still working (I’m dreaming and Nathan is trying to figure out how to make things work) on formatting and editing our site. Soon, there will be a few more tabs, and I’m slowly working through all the old posts and categorizing and tagging everything. I have about 1/3 of the old posts done. There are over 500 in total!  We’re also working on the look and what exactly we want on this front page, which posts to include in our favorites, and making a really fun “about” page. Keep checking. It keeps us motivated to finish this project :-) !

New Site!

by nathan

We have shifted from Blogger over to WordPress. We like what we can do with the new software, but things will be a bit messy during the transition — all of the articles made it over just fine, but we’re taking this opportunity to go back and clean up our tags and categories.

The bad news is that comments posted through the comment system we added to Blogger a while back will not make it over to the new site…

Everyday Life (and fun with Picasa collages)

by nathan

I’m starting a new scrapbook that will serve as a “snapshot” of my everyday life. Here are a few photos that I shot today to document different areas of our house as I’m working on this project right now. I can’t wait to get going on this project. I love having pretty photos and fancy layouts, but my real emphasis on this scrapbook is to capture my life at this moment. I want to be able to look back and remember what my life felt like during the summer of 2009.
This collage shows our piano with pictures of E&A, Audrey’s bed covered with stuffed animals, toys on the floor, Isaac lounging, Ethans wall letters, our messy book corner that needs attention, Audrey laying on the couch all by herself because Ethan is at VBS, my scrapbook stash that is curently spread out in our bedroom, A&I’s closet that they currently share, library books we are reading, and another shot of the floor of Isaac’s closet.

My goal will be to do a 2-page layout every 6 months. I’ll probably use a smaller 8×8 book for this one. I’m looking forward to this as it’s easily sustainable and it’s easy to stay caught up with this project.

Photos and Scrapbooking

by nathan
I ordered some photos last week. It’s nice to actually have some to put into albums. It had been awhile. The order was pretty big. It inspired me to work on our family album. I decided to do something really simple with this current album. This last summer I bought an album at Target that I could use just to slide the pictures into. I know that albums like this aren’t really new, but I am excited to use it in a way that it a little more creative and meaningful than just dumping the pictures in the slots. I finished a couple of layouts. Here’s what I accomplished last week.

All I used for these pages: photo album, paper trimmer, photo edge rounder, decorative paper and stickers (cut to 4×6) and adhesive.

As you can see, I didn’t have to really think about where I was going to put all the fancy things. I cut some paper down to fot the 4×6 slots. I used one of them for journaling and one for a sticker. Easy!

Since I’m planning to get together with some friends to do some scrapbooking on the 21st, I also planned out 4 pages of the album that I’m working on for Ethan. My goal is to have his up to date by his birthday next month. That album is the more traditional scrapbooking that I do. I picked the papers that I’m using, cropped some of the photos already and wrote out little maps of where I want the photos, stickers, page titles and journaling to be placed. All the things I need for those 4 pages are ready.

When my huge photo order arrived, I went through and sorted all the photos based on the albums where they will end up. Right now I have three different albums: Ethan, Audrey and Family. I’m been sorting them into a triage album where I can see what photos I have for different events. It seems to work better for me than photo storage boxes (although, I have those too).
Last, but not least, some photos from around our house:

Project 365

by nathan

A couple of the blogs that I read began promoting Project 365 a while ago. As I read the details, I thought it might be a fun idea so I decided to use some of my Christmas money to purchase it. Yesterday morning at 9:00am mountain time, it went on sale. Unfortunately (or fortunately?- depending on how you look at it!), it had been promoted so much that within minutes, their website was completely overwhelmed and unable to handle the amount of traffic it was receiving. I persevered on and off for about an hour and a half and finally was able to complete my order. Just in time, it’s sold out for now.

This is what I’m looking forward to receiving:

Included in this kit:

1 12×12 D-ring binder• 54 12×12 specially divided page protectors–four 6″ x 4″ slots and four 3″ x 4″ slots on each side• 399 3″ x 4″ journaling cards–21 designs, 19 of each design• 60 4.25″ tri-fold journaling cards–4 designs, 15 of each• 60 4″x 6″ header cards–12 designs, 5 of each• 60 2.8″ x 3.8″ footer cards–12 designs, 5 of each• 8 4″ x 6″ decorative title cards• 8 4″ x 6″ decorative end title cards• 12 12″ x 12″ decorative cardstock–6 designs, 2 of each• 25 4″ x 6″ transparent overlays–5 designs, 5 of each• 12 3″ x 12.5″ monthly divider tabs• 27 days of the week cardstock sheets–378 total stickers• 11 days of the week cardstock sheets for journaling cards–429 total stickers• 2 yards ribbon–two designs, 1 yard of each• 2 4″ x 6″ decorative boxes to hold journaling cards• 1 date stamp

And, why am I excited about another scrapbooking project?

  • I don’t have to worry much about layout. You just slip the pictures and journaling cards in the pockets. Easy-peasy. See?

  • I just need to think about what one thing I want to take a picture of and write about for the day.
  • I think it will inspire me to do something “picture/journal-worthy” each day. Maybe I’ll be more productive!
  • Easy

Tuesday

by nathan

Yesterday was a crazy day.

It all started on Monday night. I took off for a Scrapbooking evening at our church and left Nathan and the kids at home. Shortly after I left, Nathan notice Ethan was acting a little more tired and cuddly and he seemed warm.

He took his temp with our super cool temporal thermometer. Everyone should have one of these things if they have kids because the alternatives of getting a rectal, underarm or mouth temp aren’t fun. This thermometer works by rubbing it across the head. Easy-peasy.

104 degrees. That’s high. Nathan freaked and tried to call me. I didn’t have a cell phone with me. He called the church. We were downstairs so we didn’t hear the phone. Nathan gave Ethan some tylenol and Ethan puked it up. Nathan is still freaking out so he calls my friend Marie for some advice. She has 9 (due with 10 this fall) kids. She gave some advice and came over with some Motrin. Nathan put Ethan in the tub with cold water. You can imagine how much he liked that! And then he tucked him into bed and kept checking on him until I got home.

The rest of the night included at least 4 trips into Ethan’s room since he was throwing up. At 11:30 we called clinic so we could get the on-call doctor. Ethan’s temp was still pretty high and I couldn’t convert to according to the chart I had telling me when to call. We were happy to discover that it was our doctor who was on call and she called us back and told us what to watch for.

On Tuesday, Ethan basically laid on the couch all day and his temp stayed high. He complained of a tummy ache and only ate breakfast. He kept going to the bathroom often, but not a lot seemed to be coming out. So, between that, his temp and complaining about his tummy. I decided we should have the doctor look at him. Not an easy accomplishment being a 1 vehicle family. By the time Nathan came home, I had packed in over-night bag for Ethan and myself in case this was appendicitis. We took off at 3:00. Several times on the way, he said he felt like puking and he was crying because his tummy hurt.

As soon as Dr. Beulke looked at him, he felt better. Go figure. No tummy pain when she poked him. Temp was down to 100. She was a little concerned the the symptoms might indicate a bladder infection. That’s very uncommon in boys and ususally indicates something else is wrong. The initial lab work came back negative, but we will get more detailed results by Friday. We were releaved and a little perplexed that he got better so quickly. Today, he is still a little warm and lethargic. I hope it’s a bug that passes soon.

Then, last night, I went to a meeting for the Bible Study leaders that was at our church. On the way home, about a mile from the church, I was pulled over by a police officer. He told me that I wasn’t staying between the lines and that he had been following me for a little while. So, he checked my license and insurance and looked me up and all that stuff and then came back and told me to do him a “favor” and “keep between the lines”. Whatever. I had been between the lines. I personally think he targeted me because I was leaving the church and there is an AA meeting that meets there on Tuesday night. I was very upset.

That was my Tuesday. Crazy day.

Everyday Photo List and my new photo album

by nathan
I found a really cool list on Shutterfly. It’s a whole page of ideas of everyday photos. Here are a few from the list:
Rooms in your house
What you eat for breakfast
Work desk
Kitchen:appliances
The backs of your kids(spouse) as they leave the house
The exterior of your house
Piles- paper, laundry, dishes, coats, DVD’s
Pieces of the whole- part of your coffee cup, a protion of your favorite chair, clothes hanging in your child’s closet
Your morning/evening drink
Here is the whole list.
I also wanted to show you a picture of my very cool new photo album. I realize that there isn’t really anything “new” about it. It’s like the photo albums that have been used for years and year, but I love it because it has 5- 4×6 slots on each page. Just enough to put a few picture in and use one or two slots for fancy paper and journaling.
