Conversations with a 4 year old

by nathan

As we drove home after getting flu shots today, Ethan asked me a question about tornadoes.

“Why did God make tornadoes?”

My default answer in situations like this is usually one that is short and gets Ethan to stop talking. This time, I took a page from my husband’s book and decided to dive in with great detail. I rewound back to the beginning of time and two people in the Garden of Eden who lived in a perfect world and made a bad decision. That decision changed the course of history and it’s why we live in a world where things like tornadoes happen and it’s why we need a Savior. It was lengthy and deep and I didn’t know if he would get it.
Ethan considered what I said and said something about how they really didn’t do anything bad because the snake told them to do it.

Which brought up another very interesting discussion.

“Ethan, sometimes people will tell you it’s okay to do something that your mom and dad tell you not to do. What should you do then?”

“Obey Mom and Dad.” I liked that answer! He wasn’t done with questions yet and Ethan asked me,”But what happens when someone tells you to do something and a lot of other people tell you to do something else?”

“Well, you pray and ask Jesus to show you the right thing to do. Sometimes he will give you an idea in your head of the right decision to make.” I thought that was a good explanation, but Ethan had more to say.

“My head is very, very busy.”

I made a mental note to remember this conversation and his “busy” head. True words. As Ethan likes to say, “I’m true!” Yes, son, your head is very, very busy.

A minute later I heard his voice from the back seat, “But I’m never too busy to pray even if someone tells me not to.”

Happenings and a bonus photo

With the year almost done, I’m in productive mode. My to-do list of things I don’t want to do is getting smaller finally. We have someone coming next week to finish our mudding, sanding and trim work for Ethan and Audrey’s room and our room. I can’t wait to have that finally done. I have the number of someone who can tune our piano. We have our second round of flu shots today for E&A. I’ve given them a little warning. They LOVE going to the doctor’s office so I didn’t want to ruin it for them by ambushing them with shots when we get there. I want them to know ahead of time. They have promised to be brave, but I wont hold them to that! It’s no fun to get poked. I fully expect two screaming and crying children when the needles come out. I’m bringing the stroller for Isaac so I can help restrain and comfort!
I’m going to be co-leading a Bible Study starting in January. I’m in the process of working with a new friend at our church to decide what we are going to do. That should be finalized in the next several days. I’m excited and a little nervous. We’ll be meeting on Tuesday nights. I’m hoping that this will be a good way to meet more people who live near us (or relatively near).
We have several inches of new snow on the ground. I wanted to run yesterday, but I didn’t know if I wanted to run in the snow and I spent the evening talking to Catherine about Bible Study and later, I wasted time on the computer instead of spending time on the treadmill. Today is definitely a running day. I did spend some time on the rebounder for about 15 minutes. So, I did get a little exercise in.
I should sign off. It takes a while to get 3 little children ready to go into the cold!

What’cha up to, Audrey?

This nice little display is courtesy of Audrey. She set up a nice little arrangement of stuffed animals. One of them seems to be showcasing the movie The Velveteen Rabbit. I see fashion and window trimming in her future.

I Love the Christmas Season

by nathan

Today I baked 4 dozen cookies, watched the Winsted Winter Festival Parade go by our house (think Holidazzle for a small town) from the warmth of our kitchen and watched the Santa Buddies movie with the kids. It was so fun. The kids were very excited about the parade. You should have seen them standing at the window waving their blinking lights (our running lights that we got from Grandpa Fritz).

I went for a run this afternoon. I ran 3.05 miles averaging 149bpm. This is a tiny bit more exertion than I normally do, but I thought I would push up to the higher end of my easy run heart rate range. I’m planning to do this route 3-4 days a week. I’ll do a longer run once a week to push myself in regards to distance. I was re-reading an article today about the benefits of training at a low heart rate and the biggest thing that motivates me is that it actually helps your heart get stronger and enables you to be able to run harder for longer periods of time than if I were to run at a race pace each time. So, it’s good for my health and for my overall speed.
I love to run. I’m not sure when that exactly happened, but I really love it! I’ve never looked forward to working out before and I actually look forward to it now and feel bummed when I miss going. I love being able to get out and away from the busy pace of the house, I love being able to listen to my favorite songs while I’m running, and I love that I can specifically track and measure if I’m getting stronger and faster. It’s hard to set up an excel spreadsheet to track how you’re improving on an aerobics DVD, but it’s easy as can be for running!

Monsters under the bed

by nathan

So, I learned a valuable lesson the other day…

Kids get scared of “under the bed” at some point. I’m not sure what triggered it in Ethan, but he suddenly started being afraid of what was under his bed. No matter how many times I reassured him that there was definitely not an alligator under his bed, he insisted that it was there, and I just couldn’t see it.

After a couple days of this, he and I were sitting on his floor, putting on his PJs, when he noticed his own proximity to his “under the bed” and he became really scared again. “Daddy, I can see an alligator under the bed!”

I reassured him that there was no way that this could be the case. I leaned over to prove it by looking myself and I saw a stuffed animal caught behind the mattress and the wall, hanging suspended so only the head was visible. I asked if that was what was scaring Ethan, and leaned over Audrey’s bed to grab the offending beast and show him that it was harmless.

…Which leads to the lesson I learned…

Apparently, before you reassure your child that there is not an alligator under the bed, you should check.

Another Christmas Ornament

by nathan

Last year was Ethan’s first year in AWANA. The first day that they got their vests, the leaders took pictures of all the children and that picture became “the” picture that they would use time and again for art projects. A great idea except for the fact that Ethan had a really goofy expression on his face. So, this was one of many art projects my little AWANA Cubby made with this photo.

25 Days of Christmas Ornaments

by nathan

Photobucket

I may hop on and off the bandwagon of participating in the 25 Days of Christmas Ornaments theme on MamaBear’s blog. I don’t know that I have enough interesting ornaments or time to do this every day. Since I’m joining this a day late, I guess I’ve already proved that I’m probably not going to take the time to do this every day!

I chose this ornament to show you today because it’s one of the first batch of ornaments I received for my very own Christmas tree! I didn’t have a collection of ornaments that I inherited from my childhood(I wonder what ever happened to those homemade communion cup Christmas bell ornaments we made in children’s church). So, when Nathan and I got married and put up our tree, I didn’t have anything to put on it. That year, I told my mom that Christmas ornaments would be a good Christmas gift. If you know my mom, she doesn’t do anything halfway. She gave me this little angel that is playing a harp. It also came with about a dozen other angels playing other instruments. I have a whole orchestra of angels on my tree!

Countdown to Christmas!

by nathan

December is here. I can’t believe that Christmas is so rapidly approaching. In a little over 3 weeks the whole Fritz family will converge. We haven’t all been together since Kylene’s wedding a year and a half ago- and that might not count since Ethan and Audrey weren’t there. Two new babies have arrived since then. Life changes so quickly.

I feel inspired to focus on being intentional in enjoying and savoring the Christmas season. I have my December Daily album almost ready to go. I’ll talk more about that later this week. Mostly, I just want to enjoy this season with my family and do my best to make balanced decisions with my time and health so I can end the year on a positive note.

We had a very nice Thanksgiving celebration last weekend in Cottage Grove at my dad’s house. It’s still sad for me to call it “Dad’s house”. After Mom passed away, I would go out of my way to avoid using that term. Now, I guess I’m just resigned to saying it. That’s the reality. It’s not Mom’s house anymore. Holidays bring lots of thoughts about her. There are so many things I would love to talk to her about and I long to her hear her tell me that she’s proud of me. As I was rearranging some things on Sunday, I found a plaque that Mom had given me for Christmas about 10 years ago. It was almost as good as hearing from her.
