7 weeks

by nathan

Isaac is 7 weeks old! He was 10 lbs, 15 oz without his diaper yesterday. I was looking back at weights of Ethan and Audrey at 2 months and Ethan was only 8 lbs, 8 oz. Audrey was 9 lbs, 13 oz. We still have a little over a week until Isaac is 2 months. He is gaining weight faster than his brother and sister did.

He has smiled a couple of times, but I don’t know if it was intentional. I can’t wait until he is smiling and laughing more. He doesn’t like tummy time. I don’t know many babies that do, but we’re working on it. His neck is getting stronger.

I had noticed recently that Isaac’s head looked like it was getting a little flat, but I hadn’t been able to get a good look at it. It’s hard to tell unless you look from the back and turn his head just right. Anyway, Nathan mentioned it yesterday and it does look flattened on the right side. He seems to prefer to turn that way. It’s not that he can’t turn the other way and the muscles don’t seem tight, but now that the one side is flatter, his head just wants to go that way when he’s on his back. I know that it’s early and we can work on repositioning him, but I’m not optimistic. I’ve done this before with Ethan and repositioning him didn’t work. And with all the work that I’m doing to get him to nap laying down, I’m not going to go in his room and turn his head if he’s asleep and his head and turned the wrong way. It’s one more thing that I really don’t want to deal with right now.

Isaac is awake now. I better go get him.

Weight Check/Lactation Visit

by nathan

I brought Isaac in to see the lactation consultant at Ridgeview today. He weighed in at 10 lbs, 15 oz. He seems to be gaining at a healthy rate. That’s up 4 1/2 lbs from his birth weight 7 weeks ago. They like to see at least 1/2 lb a week. He was also weighed before and after I fed him. It was a shorter feeding time then normal and he spit up a little, but ate a little over 3 oz. If he eats every 3 hours (and he doesn’t always wait that long to eat), he needs 3.3 oz a time. It seems that the dry diapers were nothing to worry about. It was nice to get the reassurance.

I’m going to keep a better log of when Isaac is fussy so I can mention it at his 2 month checkup which is right around the corner. If he still seems like he’s so cranky, I’ll see what our doctor says about reflux. As of right now, I think he just doesn’t want to be put down. I’m experiencing a little break right now because he actually is sleeping in his crib and has been for about 45 minutes. Praise the Lord!

Yummy!

by nathan

I found a recipe a few weeks ago for Barbecued Beef Brisket. It’s very yummy and easy.

1 t salt
1 t chili powder
1/2 t garlic powder
1/4 t onion powder
1/4 t celery seed
1/4 t pepper

2 1/2 lbs Brisket (not corned beef)

Sauce:
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup chili sauce
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 T Worcestershire sauce
2 T cider vinegar
1/2 t ground mustard

Combine first six ingredients; rub over brisket. Place in slow cooker. In a bowl, combine sauce ingedients. Pour half over brisket and set remaining sauce aside. Cover and cook on high for 4-5 hours or until meat is tender. Serve with the reserved sauce.

So tired of crying

by nathan

Isaac is back to being really difficult. He slept a lot this weekend, but now that I’m on my own, he wants nothing to do with it.

I have had him in the swing and he cries. I put him in his seat and his cries. I lay him on the floor and he cries. I can’t and wont hold him all day. It has not even been an hour since I fed him so I know he doesn’t need to eat. So, I put him in his crib and he’s screaming. I know a lot of people are against letting their children cry. Well, I don’t want Isaac to cry, but if he’s going to cry regardless of where he is, I don’t really see what the problem is with letting him cry in his crib. He is a little more happy if I’m holding him, but he wants me to be standing and moving. I can’t do that and take care of two other kids and get the things done around the house that need to be done. Not that I’m actually getting anything done at all. I think I’m just going to go lay on my bed and cry myself while listening to Isaac scream.

Lessons learned

by nathan

I should carry a cell phone. I may be one of the only people in the US that doesn’t carry one.

Why?
Well, hypothetically, if I were ever in a situation with 3 small children and I got lost, it might be handy. It would probably eliminate the need for me to unload all three said children and implore a nice old lady at a drug store if she had a phone I could use so I could call my husband and have him look up a phone number for me so I could figure out where I was supposed to be going. Hypothetically, a cell phone would have been really handy. I hope that never happens to me. This would be a nice story for McKMama’s “Not Me, Monday”.

It would be especially troublesome if this happened while on the way to our photography session and the eldest child needed to use the bathroom.

What a week. Isaac has been a little happier, but he only took 2- 30 minute naps today. I spent more time trying to get him down then he spent sleeping. I know he needs more sleep than that and I need more of a break.

Ethan and Audrey have been pretty good. I was watching something on TV that made me cry and Audrey wiped the tears off my face. She is just so sweet. She says I have “sad” on my face. I love her so much. I need to remember these moments. My house might not be clean for another 4 years, but I am very blessed to have these kids.

On the weight loss front, Nathan and I weighed in today and I’m down 1 pound this week. He stayed the same, but he lost 8 pounds the previous week. So, not too bad. 29 pounds to go!

Reprieve

by nathan
This last weekend left me completely exhausted physically and emotionally. I’m dealing with some things that I can’t really go into here and Isaac has been extremely needy. He cries a lot. After his first couple of weeks of life, he “woke up” more and decided that he really didn’t want to be put down. And just being held doesn’t always work either. I have to be walking around or nursing him. Some days I strapped him on me for a while with a baby carrier. He also screams most of the time when we’re in the car. Driving doesn’t soothe him. Having me sit next to him so I can give him his pacifier doesn’t work either. Ugh! Dealing with that and being tired from getting up a couple times a night to feed him, has put me in a place where I feel really fragile.
Yesterday, a miracle happened. Isaac was much happier and he actually took a couple of naps in his crib. It was like a little bit of heaven. I feel like I just might be able to handle this. And now,as I type this, Isaac is napping in his room. I sure hope this is isn’t a fluke.
We ended our day with a photo session of Ethan and Audrey with their new “doll”.

Losing Weight

by nathan

Nathan and I decided to get serious about trying to drop some pounds. We started a week ago and Nathan has already lost 8 pounds. I’ve lost 1/2 pound. I’m really proud of Nathan. I’ll do better this week. I didn’t try as hard as I could have. I’ll try to remember to post weekly updates.
